Studio Dan

Studio Dan continues its collaboration with Ingrid Laubrock, winner of the 2025 German Jazz Prize. Her works move effortlessly between precise composition and free improvisation—focused, multi-layered, and full of energy.

In 2023, Laubrock wrote the piece Zones 1+2 for Studio Dan, which premiered at Klangspuren Schwaz and later at Vienna's Porgy & Bess at Wien Modern. This successful collaboration marks the beginning of their artistic partnership. A new work is now being created for 2026, which will be premiered and recorded together with Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey – one of the most distinctive improvisers of our time.

The joint work promises a piece in which compositional precision and improvisational openness stand side by side on equal footing. In combination with Tom Rainey's unmistakable sound language, an ensemble setting is created that opens up new spaces for interaction, formal experimentation, and tonal depth. At the same time, the project demonstrates how relevant and forward-looking Studio Dan's aesthetic orientation is—an area in which the ensemble has repeatedly set trends that were only reflected in the international festival landscape years later.
