Xizi Wang
We're shouting it from the rooftops! From January 2024 you can find us (among other places) at the MuTh, but we're also very happy about the personnel news:
We have chosen Xizi Wang as our FIRST ENSEMBLE CONDUCTOR from 2024. We took the first steps together in 2018, and since then she has repeatedly been seen at the Studio Dan conductor's desk. Xizi Wang led the ensemble of the International Ensemble Modern Academy in the 22/23 season, was a Conducting Fellow of the Lucerne Festival 2023 and worked as an Assistant Conductor with renowned conductors such as Ingo Metzmacher, Ilan Volkov, Enno Poppe and Susanne Mälkki. She has also been solo timpanist at the Gerhard Hauptmann Theater in Görlitz since 2020. We look forward to many joint projects in the coming years and close collaboration!

YOU BETTER LISTEN!
For the keen readers of our newsletter, now a complete preview of our concert series, so that curiosity increases immeasurably!

PLONK!
Very similar to our project ZONK!?!!, when we let our "strange music hit strange places", aka squares in public space, we imagine the effect of the impact in the MuTh concert hall; only with an acoustically more differentiated "PLONK!" in the reverberation. Again, our music meets a new audience and is—hopefully—able to spark flashes of inspiration and comic-like thought bubbles.
The two composers Julia Purgina and Oxana Omelchuk have also dealt with the "plonk" and its reverberation. Both have a playful, particularly virtuoso approach to instrumentation—a brave new world for our ears!
Equally important for this evening is Xizi Wang's official inauguration as Studio Dan's first female ensemble conductor.

ON CONNECTION
In their book On Connection, Kae Tempest describe the magical transformation of space through the connection between artist and audience. And just as George Lewis says about his piece As We May Feel, that its "associative assemblages (...) only receive full realization in their encounter with the listener, whose activity becomes one with that of the composer," and Wolfgang Mitterer speaks of "musical temperature" when he describes the magic of music-making, Tempest repeatedly return to the self-contained circle that creators and recipients bring into connection.

LOOSE ENDS
Works of art—in our case musical works—often develop a special power when their genesis is unorthodox, when elements are connected that "shouldn't be connected like that" or other canonical rule violations occur. The tension that can arise in this way often erupts in joyful discoveries and new insights (about yourself and the world), or at least in questions. With the music of the composer Sonia Mutić and Oliver Johnson, aka Dorian Concept, we want to keep this promise, and at the end of our first concert series leave tense questions in the room.
Oliver Johnson will celebrate his 20th stage anniversary as Dorian Concept in 2024. With this program we celebrate with him!
